Flower Handmade Card Ideas

handmade card ideas

I love handmade card ideas that are easy to make but look very professional. This handmade card was simple to create and suits most women as it has just a couple flowers and a ribbon on the front. You could also change the wording on the front of the card so the card could be used as an anniversary or happy birthday card. As the cards design is so simple you could give this card to a woman for pretty much any occasion.

white card

First of all, I created a square card base for the card. The card was plain white card.

flower decoupage

The decoupage is of two flowers, one red and one yellow. It is a good idea to use these colours for the rest of the card so that it matches nicely with the decoupage.

red bazzil card

As with many of my handmade card ideas I used some bazzill card stock which I find lovely to work with. I placed the red bazzill card on the front of the white card and cut it slightly smaller than the white card so that it left a border. Because the decoupage was going to be placed onto the front of the card, I felt plain card would work better than patterned, but this is down to your own choice and what you prefer.

red organza ribbon

I placed a simple red bow in the corner of the card. I tied this around the corner and used strong double sided tape to hold it in place.

card making ideas

The decoupage was also attached to the card using double sided tape. You could also glitter the flowers if you want them to sparkle or mat and layer the decoupage depending on how much room you have on the front of the card and how much time you want to spend on it.

with love peel off sticker(

I used a peel off that said ‘with love’ for the wording and I mat and layered it onto white card, then red, and then white card again. If you wanted to make it 3D you can add layers of 3D foam between the cards at this point.

with love handmade card

I placed the ‘with love’ badge on the front of the card in the top right hand corner using double sided tape. Brads are also a great way to attach things to the front of your handmade card ideas, as they can come in some really nice designs and really finish a card off really well.

handmade card ideas

This handmade card is perfect for a lady and can be used for any occasion. If you have more time and are skilled at decoupage then you can make the decoupage yourself and create your own unique design.

Handmade Baby Boy Card

handmade baby boy card

You may be struggling to come up with good handmade card ideas for a new birth. If you are this card is really simple to make and of course you can change the papers and colours so it suitable for a baby girl as well.

You may have noticed that I have used a 3D decoupage on the front of the card. Understandably you may not have the exact same decoupage; however any decoupage or image that is baby related will work just as well.

white card

I started the handmade card by folding a sheet of A4 white hammered card in half. I then decided to make the card square, so I found an envelope in my card making supplies that I wanted to use and cut the card slightly smaller, so that it would fit neatly inside the square envelope.

If your decoupage or the image you are going to use is long then you may want to make the card a tall or DL size card so that the image will fit on the front nicely.

fiskars circle cutter  circles cut from a fiskars cutter

I used a fiskars circle template to draw and cut out various different size circles.

I used different shades of blue card. Have a rummage in your card making supplies or scrap box, as this is a great opportunity to use up all the left over bits.

Again, if you are adapting the card for a girl then select different shades of pink instead of blue.

blue circles on a handmade card  circles on a card

The circles were cut out using sharp scissors to leave a crisp edge. The circles were then randomly placed on the front of the card overlapping each other.

I used double sided tape to fix the circles on this handmade card down.

3D embelsihment on a new baby boy card

The decoupage I used was quite light in colour so I mounted it onto a dark blue scrapbook paper to give it a solid bold edge. This ensures that the image becomes the focal point of this handmade card idea.

I used double sided tape to adhere the image to the card.

blue spotty ribbon

I then placed a length of spotty ribbon across the top of the card. It is important to either hide the ends of the ribbon or use a ribbon that wont fray as this could cause your handmade card to look tatty and unprofessional. A good tip here is to place a small amount of book binding glue on the ends of ribbon to stop them from fraying.

bow tied with blue spotty ribbon

With a separate piece of ribbon I then tied a small bow that I placed in the centre of the ribbon. I used a large sticky dot to secure it in place.

congratulations peel off sticker

I placed a silver peel off sticker at the bottom of this handmade card that says ‘Congratulations’ it is personal choice what you put here. The baby’s name would make it more personal together with the date of birth.

You may also want to consider different methods of adding wording to for your handmade card ideas. Rub-ons, hand writing and printing the words are becoming increasingly popular.

Wedding Card Idea

handmade wedding card idea

This wedding card is made up from scraps of paper I had hanging around in my card making supplies. It is a really cost effective way of using up materials that have been leftover from other cards you have made.

Although the design of the card is based on a wedding theme you can easily use the same layout and make the same design using different papers that you have in your card making supplies. The card can be adapted and used as a new baby, birthday card idea and so on.

wedding scrapbook paper

You will need to start this handmade card idea by finding an A4 sheet of card and folding it into a DL size card. I used white card however this really doesn’t matter as the front of the card is going to be covered with paper.

I found a sheet of scrapbook paper in my craft supplies that was beige in colour and consisted of romantic words. The words fitted in well with the wedding theme so I attached this to the front of the card using double sided tape.

cream organza ribbon

I then found a strip of cream organza ribbon ad tied it around the card. Organza ribbon works best because it is transparent so you can still see the wording on the paper underneath. If the paper you have selected is plain then a solid ribbon would be fine.

You will need to tie a knot in the ribbon at the top of the card as shown in the picture above.

gold ribbon

To make the knot more attractive tie a second piece of ribbon onto the original knot. Here I have used a thin piece of gold satin ribbon as it matches the card really well.

wedding verse

I found this mini marriage certificate in my card making supplies and decided to use this as the focal point of my card. You can substitute this with any wedding picture, decoupage paper or stamped image.

wedding words

I mounted the certificate onto brown bazzil cardstock and cut a thin border. I then mounted it onto a scrap of the same paper I used for the base of the card and tore around it to give it a different effect. I then once again mounted it onto the same brown bazzil card.

handmade card

Place the handmade embellishment at the top of the card and secure it in place using double sided tape or 3D foam if you want it to stand out.

wedding peel off stickers

Your card will need a message or some wording. It is down to personal choice how you do this. I have used peel off stickers, however printing it from a computer, or using rub ons will work just as well.

If you do decide to use a printer and you know who the card is for you can make it more personal by adding the names of the people who are getting married including the surname they will share.

peel off stickers

Mount the wedding wording on the same brown bazzil card stock as previously used for the embellishment.

handmade wedding card idea

That’s it, a really simple handmade wedding card. For more wedding card ideas please feel free to browse the rest of the website.

Baby Girl Congratulations Card

handmade card

This congratulations card for a baby girl is quite straight forward to make and if you can find some decoupage paper in blue it can easily be changed to fit in with a baby boy theme.

white card

First of all you will need to select a sheet of A4 white card from your card making supplies and fold it in half. I always use a bone tool to make the fold, however if you do not have one of these in your card making supplies and you are using your hands to press the fold down take care that you do not leave any dirty marks on the card.

double sided tape

I wanted to place a strip of baby themed ribbon down the edge of the card so I placed two strips of really strong double sided tape along the edge.

pink baby themed ribbon

I found an off cut of pink ribbon in my card making supplies that had a baby theme. You can use any ribbon you want but try to stick to only an inch in width so that it does not take up too much room on your card.

new baby decoupage

You will then need to put together your decoupage paper image. Always use sharp or better still ‘decoupage scissors’ to cut out all the shapes. The shapes can then be placed on top of each other using 3D foam.

This decoupage paper allows you to pick and choose which parts you wish to decoupage so you can make what ever parts you wish stand out.

decoupage on a hand made card idea

Once you have put the decoupage together have a look in your card making supplies for a spare piece of pink card, which you can then mount the decoupage onto. I have left about 1cm around the edge so that it has a nice border.

You will then need to mount it onto the front of your card next to the ribbon leaving a gap the other side to allow you to add some wording.

new baby verse

I used my computer to print off the wording ‘congratulations on the birth of your daughter.’ By doing this I was able to select the font and the font size as well as have it printed onto the same card as the card is made from.

If you do not have access to a computer then you can simply add words using stamps, peel of stickers, rub ons or whatever you have available in your card making supplies.

new baby words

You will then need to mat and layer your message onto different shades of pink card. Here I have used a light pink then a dark pink. I used double sided tape to hold it in place.

card making ideas

I decided to place the wording on the top right hand corner of the card. I was going to finish the card at this point but then couldn’t help thinking the with space below the wording was bit odd, so I had a look around and found a sheet of wrapping paper that had a baby theme.

pink baby baloons

I cut out a couple of heart shaped balloons from the wrapping paper and placed them onto the blank space below the wording.

handmade card

I used a pink pen to draw the string coming from the balloons.

This is a lovely handmade card to make using decoupage paper

Making Birthday Cards - Football Paper Nation Card

football happy birthday card

Making birthday cards is always enjoyable because you know it is going to make someone very happy and making birthday cards specifically with the recipient in mind is great because you can include their hobbies and pastimes into the theme of the card.

black card

This particular card is a really easy and fun card making idea that can be used for a male of any age who is interested in football.

To begin, you need to decide what size card you want to make, a tall thin DL size card, or a wider C6 size card. Here I decided that I would make a DL size card which is my usual choice when making birthday cards for my friends and family.

Use a bone tool, or if you are confident enough a scalpel to score an edge along the card to allow it to be folded in half. Depending on the size of the card to begin with you may have to remove a small amount to get the size you want.

 football scrapbook paper

I selected this sheet of 12×12 scrapbook paper from my card making supplies but any football themed paper will work just as well.

card making idea

I was unsure what team the person the card was for supported, so I thought it best to remove the blue and keep the card as neutral as possible as the blue could symbolise a specific team. We all know what men are like when they support a certain football team and we don’t want to be getting that wrong now do we!

I used very sharp scissors, a craft knife, and ruler to remove the parts I did not need. I also cut out a few extra footballs that I thought might be handy towards the end of making this birthday card.

 happy birthday card

Because the footballs are on a white strip placing this along the edge of the card would be the most effective way of using up the space. You will need to use dry glue such as, roller glue, sticky dots or pritt stick. Using this type of glue will eliminate the risk of glue splurging out the sides of the paper.

topper for handmade card   paper nation football man

You can use any type of image as the focal point when making birthday cards. Here I selected a paper nation boy with a football. Paper nation are well known for their decoupage sheets and this is one of many. I used 3D foam to raise each level of the decoupage.

If you do not have any paper nation decoupage sheets you can use any football themed embellishments that you can find in your card making supplies.

football card ideas

Place the paper nation or football themed embellishment in the bottom corner of the birthday card using a strong adhesive such as sticky dots or double sided tape. Again, I would recommend a dry glue so less mess is made.

happy birthday peel off

When making birthday cards you will need to add some wording to make it clear what the card is for. As this card is a birthday card, add a happy birthday peel off sticker to some black card then matt and layer onto silver mirror card. This is a really quick and simple way to finish off your card.

 football happy birthday card

Place the wording in the top corner of the card and you’re done! A really simple and easy handmade birthday card.

Happy Birthday Cards - Basque Card

birthday card making idea

The great thing about making your own cards is you can completely personalize them and make some unique happy birthday cards for your friends and family.  This card is a real girly card and I had a lot of fun making it. Its one to give a girl friend or your sister and one that can be done over and over again in any colour you want.

using a bone tool to score a handmade card

Begin by folding a piece of pearlescent card. I used a score board for this as the card was originally A4 size and I wanted it to be a DL size card. Press firmly when running the bone tool down the score board to give you a nice neat and easy to fold line.

ribbon attached to a handmade card

I found a spare piece of ribbon in my craft supplies. I thought it would work well with this card so I used extra strong double sided tape to secure the ribbon to the happy birthday cards left side edge.

frilly ribbon

I made a conscious decision to only attach the very edge of the ribbon to the card so the frilly part was left free. If you do not have this ribbon any type will do. Have a rummage in your craft supplies you will be amazed what you will find.

stickers for card making

I found a sheet of clear basque peel off stickers and decided they would be perfect for this happy birthday card.

basque sticker

I then stuck the peel off sticker onto some pink paper and used sharp scissors to cut it out. After cutting out the peel off I used my cropadile to punch out the holes in the basque where the ribbon would go.

ribbon on a handmade card

I used white ribbon to put through the holes of the basque and placed sound 3D foam pads on the rear side of the basque.

front of a handmade card

I fixed the Basque at the top of the card securing it down with 3D pads and a little extra strong double sided tape for good measure. I left a large space at the bottom of the card so that I could then add my happy birthday card message.

sizzix sidekick machine

Using a sizzix sidekick machine I used some darker pink pearlescent card to cut out the happy birthday wording.

happy birthday wording

Although it can be fiddly to cut these words out the side kick machine makes it quite simple

happy birthday card

I used a glue pen to adhere the happy birthday wording to the bottom of the card as the lettering was very skinny and anything else would probably have ended with glue all over the card.

Although I have chosen pink for this card, you could simply use any colors you like to make your happy birthday cards.

Card Making Ideas - Sheep Card

sheep on a handmade card

The sheep on the front of this handmade card has been made using scraps of cardstock that you will probably already have hanging around in your craft supplies. The outer edges of the card have been inked with a jet black ink pad to make it stand out and the eyes are made from brads.

Once the sheep was made I simply mat and layered it onto corresponding matching paper.

stitching on card

The backing paper on this handmade card has also been inked. I have then used a needle and black cotton to make a few stitches on each corner of the card. Using cotton gives the card a more tactile look and feel.

rub on words

To create the wording you can use rub on letters. You may decide that happy birthday is more appropriate however by simply putting baa! You are making this card suitable as a happy birthday card, thank you card or any occasion you think suitable. Of course the wording you use is entirely your own choice and obviously should be fitting the event it is intended for.

edge of card cut with decorative scissors

The edge of the card has been embellished using decorative scissors to make it look a bit fancier and give the card some more detail.

Bow

To finish off your handmade card a small piece of ribbon with a knot and brad through the middle of it, has been placed in the corner of the card. This very simple embellishment gives the card even further detail.

Handmade card with sheep on the front

A very simple and easy to make handmade card idea that is a lot of fun, and suitable for happy birthday cards and many other occasions.

Happy Birthday Cards - 3D Butterflies

white card folded to make a handmade card

Making your own happy birthday cards is great way to spend some time and you can never have enough of them, as it always seems to be someone’s birthday.

This card making idea has been made using butterfly scrapbooking paper. I began by folding an A4 piece of card, folding each side of the card into the centre.

scrapbook paper on a handmade card

I then cut two strips of the butterfly scrapbook paper and placed them on each side of the card leaving a small white boarder around the edge. The paper was attached to the card using double sided tape as this is really strong and creates no mess.

peel off stickers on a handmade cardhandmade card idea

I used peel-off stickers around the edge of the card to not only frame it but to make it look a lot more professional. If you do not have scrapbook stickers in your scrapbook or card making supplies you could also cut the edge of the paper using decorative scissors before attaching it to the front of the card.

butterflys cut out of scrapbook paper

With the left over scrapbooking paper I then cut all the spare butterflies out using really sharp scissors as I wanted to use these to make the 3D butterflies. It is always handy to begin with two identical pieces of scrapbook paper when trying to make this sort of card so that you can 3D which ever parts you want to.

3d foam on a card embelishment

I carefully placed 3D foam onto the back of each butterfly.

3d butterflys on a handmade card idea

Next I placed them on top of the corresponding butterfly on the card. You do not have to do every single butterfly as a random few will look less busy and more effective.

how to use eyelets

I wanted to use ribbon to hold the card shut so placing eyelets was the next step as this would stop the card from ripping. I used a pencil to mark where I wanted the eyelets to go.

cropadile

And used a cropadile to make the holes where the eyelets would go.

eyelet setter

I used plain eyelets as the paper and peel offs already looked really busy however these days you can get eyelets in all sorts of shapes, designs and sizes.

ribbon for handmade card idea

I selected a brown/gold piece of organza ribbon that I wanted to use to tie the card together.

bow on the front of a handmade card

I threaded the ribbon through the holes where the eyelets are and tied a neat bow.

If you do not have eyelets and ribbon in your craft supplies then these parts can be left out.

birthday card

The finished birthday card is elegant and can be used for any occasion. If you wanted to make it more personal you could also add a theme to it by adding wording such as ‘ Happy Birthday’ or ‘Happy Anniversary’ or whatever the event may be.

I hope you enjoyed making this card and please feel free to look at some of my other happy birthday cards on the site.

Sympathy Cards - Black And White Floral Design

Card being folded on a folding board

Making sympathy cards can be difficult especially if the card is for someone special to you. When I am making a handmade sympathy card I generally keep the theme very simple.

To make this sympathy card use a folding board and bone tool to fold a piece of black card. I have made this card DL sized. DL is a popular size because the front of the card is not too big so you will not have to use up much of your craft supplies to decorate the front of the card.

It is also a size that you know can be posted without having to take it to a post office to have the size measured due to new postage restrictions, so it is a good size to use and you will have no problem finding envelopes to fit the card

Find a piece of paper that is not bright in color and is fitting for a sympathy cards theme. In this case I have used a floral design. The paper itself has a lignin feel rather like lace so the card will have a texture once created.

paper being cut   paper cut ready to go onto card

Next, cut around the flowers so the background can no longer be seen. Use very sharp cutters and remember to keep hold of any off cuts so that they can be re used for other card making ideas you may have.

Paper stuck onto card

Use glue or sticky dots to attach the paper to the front of your sympathy card. To avoid the glue showing take extra care and place the ink on the patterned paper rather than the front of the card before fixing it in place.

With sympathy wording

You can use peel off stickers for the sympathy card wording. Here I have placed the words onto black card then mat and layered it onto silver card. I used 3D foam to give the wording some depth. Rub ons would work just as well or even a quote that is to do with loss.

If the card is for someone close to you, you may want to make it more personal by writing your own sympathy card wording.

Sympathy card

You can then attach the wording to the card. I used double sided tape in this instance but if you wanted to give your sympathy card wording even more depth you could add in another layer of 3D foam to make it stand out.

The idea for this card could easily be used for a happy birthday card, anniversary card or any occasion or that matte by simply changing the wording and adding some embellishments. If you change the base of the card from black to say blue, pink, white or a brighter color you can totally change the mood of the card entirely.
